Crown/Cap

Crown/Cap : Post-Operative Instructions

The anesthesia will last 2-3 hours.  During this time, avoid chewing anything and drinking hot beverages.  You might chew your lip, tonge or inside of your cheek and you might burn yourself.

You are going to have a tempory crown cemented on your tooth for 2-3 weeks.  It is made of a weaker material than the final crown so certain precautions need to be followed.

While you have the temporary crown in place:

  • No Chewing on that side
  • Flossing - you can floss if you need to.   Once you have gotten the floss between your teeth like you8 normallly would.  Afterwards, pull the floss out towards your cheek not back up through where your teeth contact.  You could dislodge the temporary crown otherwise.
  • Gently Brush that tooth or avoid it if you do not feel comfortable doing so
  • Temporary crown comes out - put toothpaste inside the crown and place back of your tooth.
  • Sensitivity - hot and cold sensitivity should only last 3-4 days.

Call the Office

  • If hot and cold sensitivity or bitining sensitivity lasts longer than 4 days.
  • If biting on temporary crown moreso than other teeth.
  • If the temporary crown is loose, absent or uncemented.
